What is Epigenetics? And what does it have to do with my biological age and health?
What is Epigenetics?
Epigenetics is the study of how your genes can be turned on or off without changing the actual DNA sequence. Think of your DNA as a recipe book—while the recipes don’t change, how they’re used can vary depending on certain “tags” added to the pages. These tags can be influenced by things like diet, stress, or exposure to chemicals, and they act like switches or dimmers, controlling which genes are active or silent. This process helps explain why identical twins can develop different traits or why lifestyle choices can impact your health even at the genetic level.
How does it relate to Aging?
Over time, these epigenetic changes can disrupt the body's ability to repair damage, which is why our hair turns grey and our skin gets wrinkled. Our epigenetic patterns are so closely linked to our aging they can be used as biological clocks, and as a means to predict age related morbidity and conditions like Alzheimer’s dementia. Because of this, a lot of research has been done to see how different health interventions can reverse different epigenetic changes.
What Can I Do About It?
The good news is that we can change our epigenetics. While smoking, stress and trauma can ‘turn off’ parts of our DNA; exercise, good nutrition and mental health support can turn parts on again. The epigenetic changes that give us our biological age can be targeted and reversed. By checking your DNA repeatedly, we can track how well our interventions are working, and provide you with real personalised preventative care.
